Springwood students wow with Joseph show

West Norfolk’s musical theatre lovers enjoyed a treat when Springwood High School staged a colourful production of an Andrew Lloyd-Webber/Tim Rice favourite.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat saw over 100 of our students take part, both on stage and behind the scenes, along with pupils from nearby St Martha’s Primary, who provided the choir.

With packed performances across two consecutive evenings in the school’s Peter Hopkins Hall, the show entertained audience members with such well known classics as ‘Close Every Door’, ‘Jacob and Sons’, and ‘Any Dream Will Do’.

Among the cast were Callum in the title role of Joseph, Hemi as the Pharaoh, and Elodie playing Levi, while Charlize, Charlotte, and Xara were the narrators.

Springwood staff members involved in the show included Dance Teacher Dawn Paulo, Drama Teacher Georgia Littlemore, Music Teachers Neil Quinn and Thomas Burt, Technician Matt Austin, and Teacher Chloe Lister, along with St Martha’s Year 5 Teacher Fiona McGovern.

“This year’s production has been a mountain to climb, with many challenges on the way, and a shorter timescale in which to turn it around,” said Robin Norman, Head of Music at Springwood, which is part of the West Norfolk Academies Trust. “But whilst this may appear to be a bit of a ‘one-man show’, I couldn’t have done it without an amazing amount of support from the Music Staff and, indeed, the rest of the Arts Faculty.

“I would like to thank all those who have committed their time to the rehearsals, learning lines and choreography, and all the various aspects that come together to help create one of the most iconic musical shows ever.

“As ever, I find myself privileged to be working with amazing and talented students, who have made this a fantastic experience for me. You are all fabulous, thank you so much – you have done us all, and yourselves, proud.”

We asked the cast: What have you enjoyed about being in Joseph and what have been the challenges?

Adrianna (Angel): “I’ve struggled to work with a range of people on a range of songs, but, as the production has gone on, I’ve grown into my role and made new friends.”

Alexander (Potipher): “I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and developing my pre-existing friendships in the arts community. I’ve also enjoyed learning to embrace a new type of character, even if it has been a challenge.”

Callum (Joseph): “I’ve enjoyed spending time with new people and having the opportunity to be part of this amazing and talented cast. It has been difficult to remember the order of my lyrics, as the songs are very similar.”

Charlotte (Narrator): “I’ve loved pushing myself and my abilities, and working with the rest of the cast.”

Charlize Narrator): "Definitely being able to sing and just have fun with like-minded people. It’s been challenging getting used to singing, dancing and acting at the same time, but I became much more confident as we rehearsed.”

Daisy (Baker/Egyptian Guard): “I’ve enjoyed seeing the teamwork of the cast develop through the rehearsals. My biggest challenge was learning and remembering the higher harmony for the last song.”

Ella (Benjamin): “I’ve enjoyed spending time with all my friends doing something I love so much. I’ve really enjoyed finding out about different special effects and costumes.”

Elodie (Levi): “I’ve loved meeting up with people and making new friends within the cast. The brothers are amazing at supporting each other and helping me overcome the challenges of learning all our lines and movement.”

Emily (Butler): “The company is such a sweet bunch, and it’s been amazing to work with them all to learn the show.”

Evelyn (Zebulon): “It’s been amazing meeting people who love theatre and music as much as I do, as well as being able to demonstrate my skills in a leading role. Although learning all the colours of the coat has been challenging.”

Gracella (Reuben): ‘I’ve enjoyed being in a strong team of lead actors who have helped me grow, including encouraging me to project my voice and sing louder.”

Hemi (Pharaoh): “I’ve really loved exploring the music, especially my songs. It’s been so fun watching the rest of the musical come together.”

Isobel (Napthali): “I’ve enjoyed working with new people and figuring out how to learn new things in a short amount of time.”

Jack (Jacob): “I’ve loved working with all the cast and really getting into the role of Jacob, even though he’s an older character, which is completely new to me.”

Jeron (Dan): “I’ve absolutely loved everything about being in Joseph, even though learning all the lines has been a bit hard.”

Jess (Gad): “I’ve had a lot of fun learning and being part of this production, although it has been hard to learn some of the movements.”

Josie (Mrs Potipher/Egyptian Guard): “I’ve enjoyed forming close relationships with the cast. It’s been difficult to learn how to portray different characters at different times, but I have always looked forward to rehearsals to have fun, and always have a laugh.”

Juan (Asher): “It’s been hard to learn all my lines and cues, but, as always, I’ve just loved being part of another Springwood production.”

Lucia (Judah): “It’s been so much fun spending time with my friends doing something we all love. Although it has been hard to embrace my character and be comfortable being silly on stage.”

Rachel-Lee (Ishmaelite/Egyptian Guard): “It’s been amazing to be around others who enjoy performing and being on stage just as much as I do.”

Sam (Issacher): “Joseph has definitely been a big commitment. But it’s been really fun getting to know everyone.”

Samuel (Simeon): “While it’s been a challenge to act with other people, I’ve really loved having a comedic role within the group of brothers.”

Xara (Narrator): “I’ve loved working within a team of narrators. Learning my lines has been a bit of a challenge, but as we practised more and more on stage. I became more confident.”

Springwood’s next stage production will be The 39 Steps, which is due to take place at the school from 10 to 12 February.
