Calling all young Norfolk pianists!
Young pianists from across the region are invited to showcase their talents at this year’s Norfolk Piano Competition, which takes place on Saturday 15 February at Springwood High School.
The annual contest is open to pianists under 25 of all levels, from beginner to advanced, and is organised by the European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA) UK in partnership with the West Norfolk Academies Trust, of which our school is a member.
“The event duration is approximately six hours, covering rounds for Preparatory, Competitive, Over-18s category, and Diploma categories,” explained Benjamin Howell, who is WNAT Peripatetic Music Lead and organiser of the Norfolk regional competition.
“Entrants may participate in one class only. Winners from each category will progress to the finals in London and receive a prize book donated by Faber Music.
“Last year, we had 70 entrants from Norfolk, with 22 from WNAT schools. This year, the competition is slightly downscaled, with only one entrant from each level able to proceed to the London finals.”
Competitors are invited to perform music of their choice, from their own compositions through to repertoire from different grades, with each category performing a ‘mini concert’ in front of their peers and other participants, and an audience consisting of parents, teachers, friends, and other family members.
The adjudicator will be Jill Morton, who is a successful soloist, chamber musician, music teacher, and concert pianist, as well as Principal Tutor for the Piano Teachers’ Course UK, the country’s professional course for piano pedagogy.
“The competition holds immense value,” continued Mr Howell. “It promotes talent across the Trust and Norfolk; enriches Springwood’s musical ethos; encourages piano provision across Norfolk; provides a unique opportunity for piano teachers; builds confidence and life skills; and strengthens WNAT’s reputation.
“As a hub of musical excellence, Springwood plays a vital role in raising standards and encouraging piano tuition across WNAT. This event expands opportunities for piano students while inspiring pedagogy and fostering a love for the instrument.
“From a WNAT perspective, this is an excellent opportunity to bring together piano teachers from across the Trust. It focuses on providing quality and inspiring piano tuition, and establishes WNAT as the focal point for piano pedagogy in the region.
“Students gain performance experience, improving confidence and resilience, and it encourages community engagement by uniting students, parents, and piano teachers.”
It is the third year the competition has taken place, and the first time it has been held at Springwood, thanks to WNAT Director of Music Robin Norman, and CEO Andy Johnson.
“By hosting and participating in this event, WNAT continues to inspire and nurture the next generation of pianists, while reinforcing its commitment to excellence in music education,” added Mr Howell.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the piano teachers within WNAT and across Norfolk for their dedication, and for providing these invaluable opportunities to young musicians on their musical journey.
“Their hard work and commitment are essential in inspiring and supporting the next generation of pianists.”
