Students from Years 7 to 10 at our school had the opportunity to meet Norfolk-born shot putter Sophie McKinna, who won silver medals in the 2011 World Youth Championships and 2013 European Junior Championships, as well as competing for Britain in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Some then had the chance to receive training tips and advice from the athletics star, putting theory into practice.

“All years from 7 to 10 enjoyed a talk with Sophie,” said Victoria Mann, Head of Year 10 at Springwood, which is part of the West Norfolk Academies Trust. “Around 60 students participated in the shot put coaching sessions with Sophie as well, improving their skills and techniques in the run up to Sports Day.”

The six-time national champion, who is the daughter of former Norwich City footballer and manager Dave Stringer and works for Norfolk Constabulary, spoke to the students about the importance of hard work and endurance, before leading the training sessions.

“Visits like this help students recognise how traits like perseverance, hard work, dedication and loving what you do can help you reach your goals,” continued Mrs Mann.

“There are wider lessons that go beyond sport and hopefully help students realise that having big ambitions help them be successful, if they choose to put in the time and effort needed to fulfil them.

“Having an Olympian visit also helps inspire our young sports people, demonstrates potential career pathways in this area, and connects students to the upcoming Olympics this year.”
